Fishing lure types — and which route to source them

Understand the lure family first, then choose a ready range or a custom route with the product, market and quantity fields visible.

Fishing lure types start with the water and target

“Fishing lure” covers several product families. The right sourcing route depends on how the lure moves, what it must withstand and whether you are buying an established range or building a new one. Water depth, current, clarity, retrieve speed and target species are useful examples for a brief; they are not promises that one lure works everywhere.

Hard baits use a rigid body and may include a lip, rattles, weights or replaceable hooks. They can be tuned for a surface, shallow, mid-water or deeper-running presentation. A wholesale range is usually easiest when the body and tooling already exist. A new body, internal weight transfer or diving profile can require a drawing and mould review.

Soft plastics are flexible bodies made in shapes such as worms, shads, creature baits or minnow profiles. The material, salt or scent additives, colour, softness and pack count all need to be stated. Soft plastic programs can be efficient for a colour-led line, but new shapes and packaging may still need tooling and sample approval.

The same lure family can serve different water conditions when its weight, buoyancy, hook arrangement and retrieve are changed. For example, a shallow hard bait and a weighted jig may both be marketed for a species, yet they require different tests and different factory questions. State whether the target is an illustrative market position or a tested performance requirement. If it is a performance requirement, define the water, retrieve and test sample before using the result in product copy.

For a wholesale range, ask for the existing model reference and the changes allowed without new tooling. For a private-label range, confirm logo, colour, hook and packaging changes separately. This keeps a low-complexity artwork revision from being quoted as a new mould, while keeping a real tooling decision visible.

Jigs, spoons and spinners solve different movement problems

Jigs are weight-led lures used for vertical work, casting or a head-and-body combination. State weight, hook arrangement, skirt or body, finish and intended water column. Spoons rely on a shaped metal body and retrieve; thickness, balance, finish and hook attachment change how they run. Spinners combine a rotating blade with a body, wire and hook; blade size, colour, clevis, wire gauge and pack-out belong in the same brief.

These are illustrative product positions. A target fish such as bass, trout, tuna or saltwater species does not by itself define a compliant product. Ask the factory to quote the actual weight, dimensions, hooks, split rings, coatings and packaging, then test a sample in the water and market where it will be sold.

When wholesale and custom lures need different briefs

Use the wholesale lures route when an existing family, size and packaging format can carry the program. Start with product family, dimensions, weight, colour selection, hooks, pack count, artwork, destination and volume. Use custom lures when a new body, colour system, mould, internal weighting or brand construction is part of the decision.

Custom does not always mean an entirely new product. It can mean a new colour library, hook upgrade, logo mark, blister card or pack count. Mark the change so the quote identifies tooling, sampling and artwork separately. That makes an existing-model quote comparable with another existing-model quote, and a drawing-led quote comparable with another drawing-led quote.

Lure specifications worth confirming before a quote

  • Family, body or blank dimensions, weight and intended water column.
  • Material, hardness or softness, internal weights and hooks.
  • Colour references, finish, coating and logo or marking.
  • Split rings, wire, eyes, skirts, blades and other attached components.
  • Retail pack, bulk pack, artwork, carton and destination market.
  • First order quantity, repeat forecast, sample count and tool ownership.

Ask for a marked drawing or sample record and keep any target species or geography as a test context. Colour, action, durability, MOQ, mould status, lead time and factory identity are Not confirmed until the specific program is checked.

Start a lure brief with the evidence visible

Send your lure type, target market, dimensions, colour, hook setup, packaging and volume through the lure RFQ. We will tell you which fields are supported by a factory record and which require a sample or drawing review. The verification standard keeps illustrative scope separate from confirmed capability.

Questions about lures

Which lure types can you source?

The supplied scope includes hard baits, soft plastics, jigs, spoons and spinners. Exact models, colours, hooks, tooling and lead time are confirmed per brief.

When should I use the custom lures route?

Use it when a new shape, mould, internal weight, colour system, marking or packaging change needs a drawing or tooling review.

Choose the lure route that fits the change

Use Wholesale lures for an existing range and Custom lures for new shapes, colours, moulds or packaging. Send the target water, product fields and volume so the route stays clear.
